Cosy reads for Autumn
Dear Reader,
Yes, that's right. Its officially SPOOKY SEASON.
Winter is coming, Pumpkin spice lattes are here and I am preparing to hibernate with a pile of awaited reads. Now some of these books you may have heard of before, they're not all sparkling new off of the new and reviewed shelf at Waterstones, some of these you may have even read before! This time of year is the prime time for re-reads, the perfect time to return to old loves and rekindle a flame for reading before a long Winter break.
The first set of books on this list are by an Author I have not had the joy of reading from yet, but have decided to dedicate this month to devouring. That author is of course, Sally Rooney. If you decide to take a delve into Rooney's novels this October, you will have waiting for you two beautifully complex romance novels. And if you return to the Rooney novels you undoubtedly adored the first time round, you will be greeted with a brand new novel, Sally's third novel; Beautiful World, Where Are You. The amount of excellent things I have heard about this book is astounding for such a recent release. It is everywhere!
If you are on the fence about having a Sally Ronney October, please feel free to join me here on this blog for a reading extravaganza! Of course you can prep by watching the insanely good adaptation of Normal People on BBC iplayer.

After you have finished the holy trinity of the Rooney books, the Simon Snow series by Rainbow Rowell is the perfect amount of magic and romance to see you through this Halloween. the third and most recent addition to the series- Any way the wind blows, is out in hardback now. If you've been on this blog for a while you will no doubt know my slight obsession with Baz and Simon, the power couple that it is a beautiful blond wizard and a very well dressed vampire. It is bizarre and brilliant- read it. Think harry potter but QUEER!
For some reason when I think spooky season, I think outer space- no relevance! Except that these books tend to have tragedy, chaos and all that good stuff strewn across them in the best ways. A couple of my top recommendations would have to be anything written by Amie Kaufman or Jay Kristoff; Particularly their shared works of the Illuminae files and Aurora Rising. I need more recs for this corner of the sci-fi genre - please send them in!
Obviously I had to mention a thriller on here, as I don't tend to read horror, but if horror is your thing please find some great ideas for your reading list here on this goodreads article!

My thriller choice is out of slim pickings as this is a genre I tend to forget about, but whenever I read any thriller I always absolutely love it. I would have to say All these beautiful strangers by Elizabeth Klehfoth and everything I never told you by Celeste Ng. These books are as cosy as they are suspenseful, the kind you could read in one sitting with an extra large mug of something spiced.
Historical fiction is always a winner at this time of year; The Gentleman's guide to vice and virtue and its sister book, A ladies guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee are the perfect pick. They're funny, queer, unpredictable and a joy to read.
My last recommendation is the fairy tale retelling of The queen of hearts that of your not new here, you'll know is one of my absolute favourite retellings. This is of course heartless by the brilliant Marissa Meyer. I recommend you explore this genre as it seems to be growing very rapidly at this moment, and there'll be a re-telling for you whether its Les Mis (a court of miracles) or Romeo and Juliet (these violent delights) both with a fantasy twist.
I have reviews for the majority of the books I've discussed and if you want to check them out or pick up a copy please see links and blogs below!
Those are all of my absolute favourite autumnal tales! Please please please feel through to send in yours through email or twitter! My twitter handle is @Issyreadsabunch and you can send me an email by pressing on the side bar on the homepage.
Until next time,
Issy x
