Heartless by Marissa Meyer -book review
Dear reader,
Today I will be reviewing Heartless by Marissa Meyer.
Plot run-through (non- spoiler):
The book is essentially a pre-quell for the Alice in wonderland books.
It's written from the Queen of hearts point of view but before she was the Queen of Hearts.
In this book, we follow lady Catherine Pinkerton on her journey to the throne.
On the way, we meet characters like Jest, the Cort's new joker, who comes from a strange land named Chess, where a battle between two queens is in action. Jests job is to protect his queen, she sends him on a important mission with Hatta and Raven to save chess. Meanwhile, Cath and her house maid & best friend Mary Anne wish to open a bakery and the only thing standing in their way is the king of Hearts unexpected liking for lady Catherine and Catherine's love for the new Cort joker; Jest.
What I liked:
This book was actually really interesting, I know how that sounds but it's true! I also liked how, Marissa Mayer developed her characters and how she presented The Mad Hatter on his journey to madness. I have never read the Alice books but Ive seen the films and (naturally) have heard the story. However, after reading Heartless I ordered the adventures in wonderland and through the looking glass. I absolutely love the Wonderland setting, because its so imaginative and new. I love how Wonderland was created to be slightly unexplained but makes perfect sense to the young mind; mysteriously wonderful.
I loved how the author represented Cheshire and Time as being a living thing (which was obviously setting up through the looking glass) I don't think Lewis Caroll could have done it better.
What I thought could be improved:
I personally thought the ending could have been better, I'm not going to say how because this is a spoiler-free book blog but if you have read it, you may know what I'm talking about. I just thought it was inevitable and that with such a creative idea to work with, it could have been different. I thought the last few pages where a bit dull and I was looking forward to a really good ending to a really good book but I don't think we got that. Other than the ending, I thought the book was amazing. I really hope Marissa Mayer decides to make another book about Chess, because I think the idea has a lot of potential.
