Red Queen by victoria aveyard (book review)

(contains extremely mild spoilers)
Dear reader,
today I'm going to be reviewing Red Queen.

Synopsis:
This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

What I loved:
I loved the world, it was so cool and different. I loved both Cal and Maven because their so different. Evangeline doesn't really get her moment in this book but I still thought her character was really kick ass. The plot twist was fudging brilliant and if you haven't read the book you will never guess it so don't even try. The ending was not what I expected but I enjoyed it all the same. Two things that really are great about this book:
1- I was never, ever bored.
2- It took me ages to read but I didn't mind because I was enjoying it so much!

What I didn't like:
The whole time I was reading this, I couldn't work out if I hated Mare or loved her, I thought she was different and complicated (which I normally love in characters) but at times, she was a bit annoying. As well as this, I think the wonderful Miss Aveyard (love her as we do) may have described certain things a tad too much. This isn't a quote but her writing felt like this:

I inhaled sharply, stealing the oxygen from my surroundings. It burns my lungs as I breathe out but something inside me is begging for another taste of its ice-cold wrath. All that just for a breathe.

Overall Verdict: 4.79/5 stars

Love
