Vaccine: How the Breakthrough of a Generation Fought Covid-19
Dear Reader,
Many thanks to Ben at Midas (@midaspr) / Twitter for putting me on this amazing blog tour! I am highly excited to share my review today.
Info:
Vaccine: How the Breakthrough of a Generation Fought Covid-19 tells the incredible story behind the creation of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine, told by the FT’s Joe Miller, who covered the project in real time, and based on 150 hours of exclusive interviews with vaccine creators and scientist couple Dr. Ugur Sahin and Dr. Özlem Türeci and their team.
Exploring the realities of trying to create a vaccine in the face of a global pandemic, Vaccine is cutting-edge science that feels like a thriller, an historic account of the triumph of human endeavour in a time of adversity
In times like this, knowledge seems like the only safety blanket we are granted. In the most trying times of lockdowns, the daily siren of the news was something most ran from whilst others clung to in an attempt to stay connected to a distant world. Now, a year on, the pandemic seems to be closing in on us from behind. We can distance ourselves from death rates and daily cases whilst we return to a new normal. We only have one decision left to us. That of the vaccine. For most it isn’t much of a confliction, after the time we have endured. We wait close to our phones for the text of invitation and we run to the vaccination centres. But for some of us, this year has installed a deep covid-related anxiety that is hard to distil. The jab, though recognised as a safe option, is something we are questioning more than we thought we would in some cases. Am I putting others in danger in putting it off? What are the risks?
Am I being told the full story?
These are some of the answers I sought from this audio book.
I was surprised by how much detail was supplied through the narration of the story, and how listener friendly it was. Not being in possession of the many degrees and PHD’s of science our mentioned scientists had, I found myself following the story rather easily. I was well informed the entirety of my listen and came out of the experience feeling educated and enlightened.
You’ll find yourself following the story intently with the brilliant narration keeping you interested and invested the whole way through. How interesting I found it to be placed into the shoes of those hard-working scientists whilst they burnt themselves out trying to end this pandemic while I stayed at home baking sough dough and dancing around the too-small garden. It provides a multi-perspective to the pandemic and allows you to view those long months as an exciting journey towards something stirring instead of the repetitive cyclical 24-hour year most of us remember it as. This book turns over every leaf of the discovery, research and trials of the vaccine without leaving gaps making for a reassured reader. If you have any questions or queries about any of the pre-production stages of the vaccine this book is sure to dispel them, and allow you to understand everything about the pandemic-ender you might be queuing up at your GP for soon!
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read through the facts before making these sorts of medical decisions. Like us all, I do think it’s highly important to get the full story when these things are offered if you have any worries. Which is why I am so grateful for the existence of this book as its straight from the mouth of the horse. Meaning its trusted, 100% scientific, and worthy of your time. As well as this, I recommend to any who have in interest like me, in what was going in behind the scenes in those gloomy months- you might just be surprised!
