Holy Hell I've read a lot of books this month - a sorta rewind & wrap up sitch.

(Non-spoiler, who knew?!)
Dear Reader,
Your girls been busy. Real busy.
I have read 6 books since we last spoke. I last posted about a week ago. SIX BITCH. How? Well audiobooks (which is still reading ass holes) and the luck of good picking! I thought about reviewing the particularly good ones but I’m just too damn quick baby. So, I thought I would give you the 411 of all the stories I ate this month. Yes, I did steal that from Xtinemay so credit to her- I just really resonate with the phrase this week as I did genuinely DEMOLISH these books. The first book I read this mental week was nothing but Roseanne A. Brown’s, a song of Wraiths and Ruin (remember when titles like that were poetic and beautiful and not the most confusing shit in the world as it sounds like the title of seven other series? The good ol’ days.) This book was AMAZING. I seriously loved it; I’ve already pre-ordered the next one which I only do when I really need to continue with a series in the only way I can. The plot was original (original plots? Who knew they still existed?), the world-building excellent and thorough, the characters beautifully written into existence and dynamic. The anxiety representation? Fucking brilliant. This book was not about anxiety in the slightest, it’s an Aladdin re-telling for god’s sake. It doesn’t really belong there. But that’s exactly why it’s so riveting and real, because that’s exactly what anyone who has suffered with anxiety knows anxiety feels like, unwelcome, out-of-place and very shitty. This book was EXPENSIVE. No not in the physical way fool, just everything about it was rare and pricey. Read it, love it, tell me about it hun. The second read of the week was Pride; A pride and Prejudice Remix by Ibi Zoboi. Again another great read, a really short listen. I’m reading pride and prejudice for English and was just about sick of that small minded society shit, and what better way to stick it to the 1800’s then read the better version! I haven’t got much to say about it except it’s fun and quick and has that some cozy feel cuddling up with a classic has. It’s shitty that the syllabus is still just a whole load of white people writing about white people or being racist about black people, so this acts as a kind of fuck the system and an overall really good time read.

Holy crap I read the toll! That shit was crazyyyy. It was not the ending I was expecting, but it was a good ending all the same. I was going to do a review for it but I had no idea what to say, my thoughts were extremely scattered and I had no clear verdict. I would still rate it 5 stars, because Mr. Shusterman is truly a genius.
However, Thunderhead remains my number one from this series. I read a fairyloot book! Fable by Adrienne Young. No lies, I spent the entire book expecting a mermaid to show up. Where were the mermaids fairyloot? WHERE? A fairloot book is always a fantasy but there was no fantasy aspect, was it because it was just the first book? Do mermaids pop up in the second one? I’ll let you know, because I have every intention of reading it. Sexy mermen or no sexy mermen, I strangely found myself very in love with this book and this crew. Never has crew been so literal. I loved it! Like a lot! Really really did not think I would have but what can I say, Adrienne young, has got a way with zee words. Well, that being said, there was one scene and I’m not telling you with who or when but there’s a kiss, and it’s underwater. I SWEAR, you can’t kiss underwater, like I thought that was a fact that you can’t do that underwater. I’m sorry to make such a big deal out of this but it bugged me immensely.
Other than that, I loved this book. It’s quick, it’s fun, well written, it’s got slight part one six of crows vibes.

Next! I finally picked up the Raven Boys, which was fabulously fantastical to say the least. This was one of those, ‘I loved every page’ books. It was so cosy and whimsical and oh my goodness, Maggie’s writing is absolutely alluring and almost- prepossessing? Finding the words for it,  is  almost as difficult as describing the plot- all you need to know is it has magic and folklore and an all-boys academy. I mean, how can you not be fully sold?
This book was like if magic was thrown into we were liars by e. Lockhart (my favourite book). I’m currently reading you should see me in a crown on audio, when I’m finished I’m jumping straight to the dream thieves and I can’t wait.

I read Dear Martin by Nic Stone after tearing up at one of Stone’s IGTV videos and deciding her book had sat on my shelf for long enough. It was a beautiful story full of reality and heart. It made me cry, several times, but it also made me smile and reflect a lot. Nic Stone is a brilliant writer, she really got into Justyce’s head and told the story through him. It will melt your heart, read it. The last book I read this week was The Black kids by Christina Hammonds Reed. This was not a five-star read for me, but it was definitely close. This book is not centered around a black kid trying to fight back against discrimination, it’s about a girl who just lives her life as the people around her do but still has to deal with the prejudice and the hate just because she’s black. It was a different perspective to most book’s I have read with a #blacklivesmatter movement plot line, as these books were filled with insanely strong boys and girls fighting back against the system and anything that kept them down. In this book, the main character is strong, but she is just trying to live, without that whole disappointing side of the world affecting her too much, but she still gets pulled under anyway. She’s also not that great a person but the world still comes back at her 10x as hard because of her race. It was raw and a no bullshit sort of book. It was fresh and real.

I really recommend it for everyone, but it is specifically worth the read if you’re not a POC, to deepen your understanding and gain a bit of perspective. How absolutely ludicrous and unwarranted always, the world’s treatment to anyone different is and how you and I fit into that. I really enjoyed it.
And those were the stories I ate this week, I’m about 100 pages into 2 books at the moment and as I’m on half term an hoping to get through a few more but next week.
What are you guys reading?
Drop me an email if you’ve read one of these or if your excited about something your reading!
Until next time,
Iss x
