Am I normal yet? A review.
Dear Reader,
As it appears, I have had a revaluation. Yep, just call me Angelica Schuyler. I have found...
Wait for it.
A book where all the boys are complete twats! But we like them anyway! Ah finally
some reality.
Holly Bourne- putting the real back in ya.
I am truly stunned. Ethan- prick. Joanna or whatever the hell his name is- complete numpty. Guy (please if you’re reading this, never call your child Guy) Abbbbbsoloute bell-end.
Oli was literally the only lovely guy there, I really hope we see him in the next one- probably not, since it’s set in America. It was such a lovely book though. Really genuine characters that didn’t always do the right thing and we loved them for it. Everyone was thought out, had a back story, the parents where involved and so where siblings and no one was perfect I think the more genuine a contemporary book is the better it’s gonna be. (And I think we all know I’ve read enough bloody contemporary to know haha.) Especially if your trying to work in humour which Holly does brilliantly.
The only thing I didn’t love about this book was the bits where she kisses those boys and has not a single worry about it. I just thought all the other representation about OCD and anxious tendencies where all fantastic up to that point. It didn’t make sense. Especially when you’ve read books like turtles all the way down by John Green where Kissing has this huge ideology surrounding it. And it’s absolutely terrifying for our main character, who is also suffering from OCD.
I don’t know, I thought that was a little bit of a confusing area.
Other then that I completely loved how both Anxiety and OCD was talked about and represented in this book. I thought it was very convincing and didn’t feel forced or like the author was trying to hard to fit both of those challenging topics into the book.
I really loved how feminism and controversial topics where included in this book. I think the spinster club is such a brilliant idea, I did mention it to my own friends about starting our very own spinster club which they thought was a bit of a cliche but I’m sure I can get them on board ;)
I loved that Evie was into films because I love films too (not quite as much, I’m moe of bookie if, you know, you hadn’t noticed) but it was very cool to see a feature from all my favourites and here about the film industry. I put some tabs on the pages where the girls talked about different theories and complex’s because I lovvvve that stuff, I find it so fascinating.
You know one thing I bloody LOVED about this reading experience?
Reading a book set in England. Finally. Reading about Alevels and GCSE actually knowing what the hell their talking about. It was fab. I never want to read a book about the American school system ever again. *She says opening breathless*
Overall, a fantastic book that I would recommend to any young girl looking for a good introduction to YA.
Until next time,
Issy
