Lover (Taylor Swift Album Review)
Dear Reader,
Its fudging EVERYTHING.
I love Taylor so much like she is my actual queen and government. I’ve been following her for 9 years, I’m only 13. I listen to Taylor whenever I can. I went to her rep tour in a full get up. She is my favourite singer. My favourite solo artist. You name it, she is my fav. So I’ve been waiting for this day for months on end. It was definitely worth the wait.
The first taste of this album was ME! Which I thought was okay, I loved the music video and I loved the voice mix between Brendon Urie and her. But it wasn’t very Taylor. Then we got You need to calm down. I loved the music video and the song but I was hoping we’d see something she’d written about her life, even though she was supporting the LGBTQ+ community with that song is amazing, I missed hearing about Taylors life.
Then we got Archer, it was Taylor this time which was the main reason I loved it. This song got me really excited for the album. Well more excited than I already was.
More days rolled past with drumming fingers and jumping knees and then 2 things drooped.
The Lover music video was so so so so sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo – so good. I’m still not over it. I’ve watched it what, 12 times now? Every time I just see new things and love it that much more.
Then we got the album.
BOOOM.
Let’s go through this song by song.
I forgot that you existed:
This is probably the most relatable song Taylor has ever written. I for one, know exactly know what she’s talking about. That moment when you're having so much fun your mind forgets the person your hung up on and from then on you realise life can go on without then. It was perfect.
Cruel summer:
This really reminded me of another Taylor song, but I can’t remember which one. It’s like a story in a song. It’s also hella catchy, I and my sister love this one especially. My favourite line is ‘I love you ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?’ So impactful.
The man:
I have been waiting for Taylor to write a song about this for so long. She touched on it in Reputation but this song really hits the nail on the head. I hope this song gets played on every radio station ever on repeat until those ass holes get the message. I love this song, not just because it so easy to dance and sing to but because it’s got an important message and it’s still 100% Taylor. Seriously, how does she do it?!
I think he knows:
This is grown-up Taylor and I think I speak for all swifties here when I say we love this Taylor. I mean, we love all our Taylors but we know she’s in a good relationship with the man she loves and we are all so happy for her!
Miss Americana & the heartbreak prince:
What a title. I love this one, It’s different to the rest if the album but it ties in perfectly with the album. It’s one of those songs where it’s really up for interpretation. This song sparks a lot of nostalgia for me. I’m not sure why.
Paper rings:
I love this one! It’s so cute and clicky. This one is so one of those songs you sing in front of your mirror with a hairbrush. Sooooo catchy! Hopefully, she’s hinting at an engagement?!?!?!?! I would die.
Cornelia street:
This song really tells you a story. It’s a good car song and It’s really beautiful. I love it when songs focus on something really small like a piece of clothing or a house/ street. It makes the listener feel closer to the artist.
Death by a thousand cuts:
This song is written really well, but it’s definitely not my favourite. My fav lyric is ‘I look through the windows of this love even though we put them up.’ I also like when she says, ‘trying to find a bit of me you didn’t touch’ which I think explains perfectly when someone’s broken your heart and everything feels wrong and painful.
London Boy:
Oh my god, this one is so great. I live in London so Taylor singing about it is just everything. It’s also hella catchy and I may be able to relate to it a little bit… hehe. I saw this thing on snapchat about how people were annoyed about this one because of the stereotyping but she’s just talking about her experience of London with her boyfriend so can everyone just calm down. Wink.
Soon you’ll get better:
This one is a heartbreaker, I cried when I listened to it the first time. I don’t know if she wrote this about a real-life experience but I really hope not. I don’t want to google it. But yeah this is a sad one. I’m listening to it again now and the tears are rollin’ haha. I really like this one but I can’t listen to it a lot, it’s too depressing.
False God:
This one is the shit. It’s one of those songs you sing too while looking out a car window when its raining, with headphones on. This is definitely one of my favourites. I love when she compared him to New York. I want someone to compare me to New York one day. I love the subtle trumpet and the lyric ‘I go there when you touch me/ honey hell is when I fight with you’ and ‘daring you too leave me just so I can try and scare you’. It’s a brilliant song, I love it.
Afterglow:
This song is hella relatable. It’s when you fuck up in a relationship and you want them back so bad- but you can’t have them. It’s excruciatingly true. I belted this one super loud in the shower the other day lol. Also, in the chorus when she says ‘I don’t wanna do this to you’ she sounds amazing. I mean she always sounds amazing but she sounded AMAZING in that particular line.
It’s nice to have a friend:
I don’t love this one, I won’t lie. It’s cute but I haven’t been like I wanna listen to It’s nice to have a friend right this second! Like I have with paper rings, I think he knows
Daylight:
Really cute song. Very Taylor. I love the lyrics. I think this song is about awakening and true love. It reminds me of Delicate like A lot. It’s a beautiful way to finish off the album. My fav lyric is ‘step in to the daylight and let it go.’
So that’s it I guess.
One thing I noticed about this album is the word Blue was used a lot. I dunno if anyone else picked up on that. Just listen for it when you listen to it.
I can not WAIT for the music videos and the tour. You know I’m gonna be there if it’s the last thing I do.
Love
