Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott (book review)
(SPOILERS AHEAD!)
Dear reader,
today I'm going to be reviewing five feet apart.
Synopsis:
Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions. The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals. Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.
What I liked:
I love Will, like looooooove him. He's so cute and ah! I loved reading in his perspective. Cole is going to suit this role so much with his floppy hair and effortless swagger, can't wait to match the film! Stella, we'll talk about you later.
I loved the best friend, I wish we heard more about his life and (WARNING SPOILER AHEAD) why, oh why did he have to die? It was a great plot device but why God why? So sad. Anyway, I also liked how fast this book was and the cover.
What and who I did not like:
Frikin Stella. I did not like her at all. She was so annoying and the whole youtube thing really cringed me out. I also didn't like how she always edged Will on, even though she can't frikin touch him. And the fact that she just stripped off for him after knowing him for like a week, have some self-respect sis. Now I get it their gonna die, we know but their relationship was literally built of a disease and it kind of romanticized it a little.
Let's face it, Five feet apart is a wannabe TFIOS. Even if this book came out years before TFIOS I would still call it a wannabe TFIOS. It's just nowhere near as good. But its got a pretty spine and a hot male lead in the film so we'll let it off.
overall I rate it: 3.75/5
