The poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (book review)
Dear reader,
Today I'm going to be reviewing a book called the poet X.
synopsis:
A young girl in Harlem discovers slam poetry as a way to understand her mother’s religion and her own relationship to the world. Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighbourhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.
What I liked:
I loved Xiomara's character, I thought she was so strong and sassy the whole time I was like yes queen! I loved learning about the rough side of Harlem and the format was great. I thought the love interest was definitely swoon-worthy and their relationship was so cute and honest and at times, yes a little steamy. I also loved the whole Catholic thing because it made me question some stuff I should have addressed a long time ago.
What I didn't love:
I thought Xiomara was amazing but maybe a little self-absorbed at times? I dunno I think you have to think about the background as well... I also thought for the whole thing being about slam poetry club, there was not a lot on slam poetry club, and we never heard the poems she read out which would have been great to read.
Overall I gave this book 4.758/5 stars.
